Bathroom remolding: Are you using the right contractor?
Not long ago, we used to go to our local hardware store or called a friend-relative to give us a hand with finding the right general contractor for home renovations. Today, we have the internet to watch videos on how to do a job, or lookup ratings on a company to do the work. Before you start ordering supplies from Home depot and watch videos on YouTube, you have to ask yourself 2 questions. 1. Am I handy and capable of task? 2. Do I have the tools and time to do job? If at any point you couldn’t answer these questions confidently, I would take the time and do more homework. You ever remember seeing one of those funny signs at a workplace stating $50hr Labor, $75hr to watch me work, and $150hr to fix the mess you started? Well, there’s a reason for that. Never start a project you can’t handle.
How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?
Home Depot estimates anywhere from $5,000 to $30,000 on bathroom remodeling. This is based on size and average labor cost. Tiles can cost an average of $2 per square foot. Sinks can cost $99 – $2000 with single or double vanity. Shower-Tubs range from $129 – $ 12,000. Sure you can go to your local hardware store and buy 300 sq. ft. of tiles for $450, $200 on a faucet, and $800 on a shower kit; cost total with other supplies just under $1,600. Do you have the time, tools, and dumpster for this project?
I’m handy, I have time, and have a friend to help remodel
Congratulations, most people don’t have the time or helping hand. I’m one of those people. I have the time, but never have a friend willing to help. So now that we know your handy and have done all your research. Shut off all water valves for bathroom and start tearing it apart. Toss all the old tiles, faucets, and tub in mini dumpster or pickup truck. Scrap old glue and prep for new glue and tiles. Keep in mind, when doing floors, make sure it is leveled evenly or sloped at an angle to were your water drain is leading too. The shower is usually the only point were you need to slop for water drain; this is crucial because this is were beginners make there mistake. Another common mistake is placing tiles unevenly and not leaving room for grout: that’s what those little plastic crosses are for.
